A state transportation draft master plan identifies dozens of areas across Hawaii that are dangerous for pedestrians.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Tuesday 13 of those “areas of concern” are on Oahu, while 18 are on neighbor islands.
One of those of areas is Waianae’s Farrington Highway, where there have been 22 pedestrian accidents between 2004 and 2008. It’s a heavily traveled straight stretch on Oahu’s west side.
Fifteen pedestrians have died on Hawaii’s roads so far this year. A dozen of those deaths were on Oahu.
The plan recommends restriping crosswalks, painting pavement markings and installing more pedestrian signs. The 93-page draft is now available for public comment. It can be downloaded at www.hawaiipedplan.com.
