City Workers Killed in New Mexico Trench Collapse

A trench collapse has killed two city of Las Vegas utilities department employees. Las Vegas City Attorney David Romero confirmed for the Las Vegas Optic the workers died Wednesday morning when the trench they were working in collapsed on them.

Romero says the men were working on a sewer line.

Frantic efforts were made to rescue the two, but the men died at the scene. Work was being conducted to shore up the trench and remove the bodies.

Romero says the incident was reported to federal authorities. The city is also investigating.

The Optic reports Mayor Alfonso Ortiz and City Manager Timothy Dodge were personally calling family members of the dead workers to express condolences.
