Homeowners Want Dangerous Boulders Removed

A Billings, Mont., couple whose home was destroyed in October by a falling boulder has filed a motion in District Court asking that the city of Billings be ordered to remove sandstone debris from the property and that two other threatening rock slabs be stabilized or removed.

The Billings Gazette reports that the motion filed by Jane Deschner and Jon Lodge also asks that Montana be ordered to use its emergency powers to do something about the problem.

The couple’s home was destroyed Oct. 9 when a 60-foot section of rim rock weighing an estimated 1,000 tons fell and broke into boulders, striking the house.

The Billings City Council earlier this month voted against removing two large slabs from city-owned parkland despite a staff recommendation to do so.
