Farmington, N.M., Mayor Tommy Roberts is asking Gov. Bill Richardson to declare the northwestern New Mexico city a disaster area because of extensive damage left by flash flooding in early August.
Roberts wants an estimated $2 million in federal funds for repair and cleanup costs.
The mayor has declared a “state of emergency” exists in Farmington from the flooding, saying streets, bridges, stream crossings, storm water facilities and power lines were damaged.
He says Farmington could be partially reimbursed for cleanup costs.
Roberts says it’s important the city position itself to take advantage of the funds if it’s found eligible for them.
He says the damage threatens the safety, health, welfare and well-being of citizens, and that local public and private resources are insufficient.
