Obama Issues Flood Disaster Declaration for Wyoming

July 16, 2010

President Barack Obama has issued a federal disaster declaration in Wyoming in response to flooding this spring in Fremont County and the Wind River Indian Reservation.

The declaration iprovides federal money to help local governments and some private, nonprofit organizations that suffered losses in the flooding caused mainly by rapidly melting snow.

The state has said that the cost of required public assistance in response to the flooding exceeds $7.6 million. More than half of that is for road and bridge damage.

The Wyoming National Guard sent 400 soldiers to help battle the flood, which occurred June 4-18. It was one of the largest guard deployments in state history.

The federal declaration also provides aid statewide to help prevent or reduce risk of future floods.
