Storm Causes Estimated $4M Damage in Wyoming

July 7, 2009

Officials in Casper, Wyo., are asking for the state’s help in repairing an estimated $4 million in damage from a July 4 storm.

Natrona County commission chairman Rob Henry and Casper mayor Kenye Schlager sent a letter to Gov. Dave Freudenthal asking him to use his emergency fund and other sources to help.

They said high winds and heavy rain caused about $2 million in damage each to county and city property, including the Hall of Justice, the sheriff’s office, the police department, The Nicolaysen Art Museum, Central Wyoming Fairgrounds and Wyoming Medical Center. Parks and streets were also damaged in the city as were county roads.

In addition, more than 125 people have reported flood damage to homes and businesses through a hotline set up by the county’s emergency management agency.

Just more than 2 inches of rain fell in downtown Casper. Police say no one was injured.
