Nevada High Court Justice’s Car Plows Into Store

A Nevada Supreme Court justice and a store owner escaped injury June 22 when the judge’s car smashed through a glass storefront window in Las Vegas, authorities said.

Justice Kris Pickering emerged slightly dazed from her Mercedes station wagon, apologized, and said the accelerator malfunctioned as she was pulling into a parking space, said UPS Store owner Dane Halovich.

“She got out. I called 911. She said the gas pedal got stuck,” Halovich told The Associated Press. “Glass flew everywhere. The car hit the island desk area, and that just shot all the way back into the store.”

Halovich said he was alone in the store when the car crashed through the window just after 9 a.m.

Photos taken by Halovich show Las Vegas firefighters examining the vehicle after it came to rest inside the store. He said Pickering, a regular customer, had two pet dogs in the car. He said they also were unharmed.

Pickering, 56, went home and then to work, where she released a statement through Supreme Court spokesman Bill Gang. She said she was thankful no one was injured.

She was not issued a citation, Las Vegas police said.

“She said she was not sure what caused the car to accelerate,” said Gang, who added that the air bag on Pickering’s car didn’t deploy.

The store is in a supermarket shopping center that features pizza, coffee, shoe repair and smoke shops several blocks west of downtown Las Vegas.
