California Assemblyman Dave Jones To Seek Insurance Commissioner Spot

Just two weeks have passed since the Nov. 4, 2008, election, but California Assemblyman Dave Jones has already announced plans to seek the state’s Insurance Commissioner position in 2010.

Jones, D-Sacramento, represents the 9th District in the California State Assembly and is serving his third Assembly term. By 2010, he will have reached his term limits for that office.

Jones is the outgoing chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and served on the following additional standing Committees of the Assembly: Budget, Health, Agriculture and Utilities and Commerce. He also served on the Select Committee on Youth Violence Prevention. Prior to his election to the State Assembly, Jones served as a Sacramento City Councilmember for five and a half years.

Jones touts his record as a consumer champion. According to his Web site, in his first year on the Assembly, 17 of his bills made it to the Governor and 12 were signed into law — the highest percentage of bills signed of any freshman legislator. In his second year, 15 of his bills made it to the Governor’s desk and 10 were signed into law. “These bills demonstrate his commitment to children, affordable housing, environmental protection, health care, privacy rights and improving access to the courts,” his Web site states.

In 2010, Jones could run against current Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, although Poizner may be a gubernatorial candidate.
