Increase cost to consumers and less competition and choices to chose from. It’s fine if people like paying more for their insurance, but the reality is that they do not want to. Most want it both ways, but if they push to hard like they have done with the banking industry, we all know the end result.

I have been very interested in the office of Insurance Commissioner, but always wonder why the person who runs for the office has not worked in the industry. Now I’ve had limited exposure to a few insurance commissioners and Poizner is the one I know a little bit more about but seriously, is there ever an insurance commissioner who has worked in the insurance field?

When the commissioner was appointed, not elected, they usually WERE former members of the industry community. Now that we’re electing the commissioner, people seem to want someone adversarial, if not openly hostile, to the industry. Go figure!

Strange what happens when things change. I wonder if someone from the industry ran what their chances of winning would be since they wouldn’t necessarily be a politician. Would industry organizations be willing to support that kind of a candidate? I’m just thinking out loud. I know that there are still some states where the commissioner is appointed, but I am not sure of their track records with people being from the industry or not. To me it would seem better to have someone who has knowledge from that industry to be in that position.

The problem with non-politicians from our industry running is that they can’t garner the support of the political party machine. They need the party to back them with funding and support. The last guy who ran from the industry didn’t have his party’s backing and his campaign fell flat.
