My God! Does this mean that “governments” might not be perfect? That, because government workers will get paid no matter what their results, they might not have any incentive to succeed (actually, when government agencies fail, their budgets and power only expand)? Are you trying to tell me that a business in the free enterprise arena only makes money if they satisfy consumers’ demands? What will happen if too many people learn this? This could be more devastating than the invention of the printing press!! We can’t let the masses have access to knowledge!! They might no longer show “authority” the respect it deserves!

I suggest that you ignore this article! Government has the situation under control…there is no need for private fire fighting entities. Now go back to your TV’s.

So let me get this right. Biff and Muffy choose to site a $5 million frame home in the midst of tall mountain pines, up a long dirt road with no water, find a yuck insurer to underwrite it, and the yuck then PAYS a firefighter to protect it? Go figure. Yeah, this should encourage smoke jumpers to volunteer in the future. Pray for lightning I guess….

hey, lucky seven, you need to spend a few years on a fire crew before you make stupid observations.
nobody wants to fight fire more than professional firefighters. they just use common sense, which is more than most of these homeowners obviously have.

My point is this: you have some insurance companies. They want to make a profit. If the houses burn, they must pay and may not make a profit. They look at the situation and say, “hmm…there are fires in the area. I know that the government has a ‘fire fighting dept.;’ I can take my chances that the government will prevent the houses from burning or I can hire a private fire fighting company. This/these private companies’ pay is based on how successful they are in preventing the houses from burning. If they are not successful, they’ll go out of business. If the government’s fire dept is not successful they’ll…continue in ‘business.’ Which do I rely on?” The insurance company executives are smart enough to know that the private companies are more likely to succeed and have voted with their feet by putting their dollars towards the private companies.
