New Law in Utah Can Send Uninsured Vehicles to Impound Lot

Police in Utah have a little more power when it comes to keeping uninsured drivers off the road.

A new state law allows police to impound any vehicle that is on the road and not insured. Before, police could only issue a citation for driving without insurance. Now officers can write the ticket and take the car, too.

The new law went into affect on May 5.

Police say drivers who had to pay higher rates would take their chances with a $1,000 fine repeated citations for driving without insurance.

The state representative who sponsored the bill says one of the first cars taken off the road belonged to a man who was convicted twice of driving under the influence and could not get insurance.
