Why does our society tolerate auto theft? In the old days they used to hang horse thieves on the grounds the thief deprived the owner of transportation necessary to survive. What’s changed?

Auto theft is a misdemeanor and most thieves aren’t deterred. The cost to the public is outrageous in terms of inflated insurance premiums and all because some low life dirtbag wants to make a fast buck. Our legal system isn’t serious about mitigating the problem and law enforcement knows it.

Here’s a suggestion that was proferred back in the 1970’s that’s still valid. Anytime a vehicle is stolen and not recovered, the title should be destroyed and the VIN put on a national registry in case somebody tries to use a stolen VIN to re-title another vehicle. If it’s recovered but deemed a total loss, the VIN plate is likewise destroyed. That will prevent re-titling.

Or even better……..anytime a vehicle is started without the proper key, a small explosive device located under the drivers seat detonates 2 minutes later. This eliminates repeat offenders and there’s no cost to the public to prosecute or put them in jail.

I like the small explosive device idea.
