Utah Lawmakers Consider Revoking Driving Privilege Cards

Utah lawmakers may consider restricting or revoking driving privilege cards for undocumented immigrants when the 2008 Legislature convenes this week.

Created in 2005, the cards allow immigrants to drive legally — with insurance — without having other valid state identification.

Opponents say the cards are being used for purposes outside the driving-only intent, including cashing checks, buying alcohol and firearms.

Republican Rep. Brad Daw says the law doesn’t include provisions for age verification. The Orem lawmakers says he’ll propose legislation to prohibit that use and revoke cards for uninsured drivers.
