In my state, you\’ve had to provide the Insurer\’s name and policy number before you renew your registration since I have been driving, 20+ years…

My state requires insurance also, and we still have 30% or higher of drivers uninsured. Any teeth in the law?

Sure does in my state. I changed insurer\’s just this past year. I was required to send proof of coverage since the new carrier is not required to report a new policy. THe only requirement is that the cancelling carrier report the cancellation. Its the insured\’s duty to report new coverage.

I send a copy of my new binder to the state which misplaced it. Next thing I know, I have a letter from the DMV saying turn over your plates, your registration is here-by suspened for one year for having no coverage. Thankfully, a quick call to the DMV and a fax of proof of coverage showing no lapse in coverage between carriers and I had the registration reinstated.

Washington has had a mandatory liability
insurance law for many years. Our liberal
city, county and state governments feel it discriminates against the poor to actually require people to adhere to the law. Naturally that has been catastrophic to those who have been injured by an uninsured driver, estimated to be 30%-50% of the cars on the road in our most liberal of states. If we actually enforced the law it would 1) lower the extreme expense of uninsured motorist coverage 2) reduce the number of
cars on our highways and 3) solve most traffic congestion problems we experience in our area. Moral of the story? Do the right thing and we all win.

Existing law has no enforcement mechanism until you\’re *caught* driving without insurance. You can get away with a lot before then.

The uninsured driver who hit me last year didn\’t have a license, either, but her car was currently registered in her name. (She\’d never had a license, she was carrying an expired learner\’s permit 2+ years old.)

Why does the state allow an unlicensed driver to register an uninsured car?

Now that she\’s been caught, she\’s been fined a lot of money and she\’s in collections for the damage to my car, but wouldn\’t it make more sense to have prevented her from registering the car in the first place?

Now, now bulldogg. It is obvious that the 01/15/07 posting at 3:05pm was not you by why do you feel it is necessary to attack the left? Do you know it is \”the left\” that attacked you? Where is \”your\” compassion and understanding or do neocons check those in at neocon hall? Keep up with the healthy debates. Love your posts.
