In Memoriam: Robert Hoye Dies

Robert M. Hoye, formerly of Arrowhead General Insurance Agency, has died of natural causes.

Hoye was born in Harvey, N.D. on March 23, 1923, the son of Scandinavian immigrants. After graduating from Harvey High School in 1941, he joined the Army, served in World War II and was honorably discharged following his tour of duty.

He received his Bachelor’s in criminology from Eastern New Mexico University and pursued graduate studies in psychology at the University of Wisconsin.

He entered the property-liability insurance business as a claim adjuster for the Hartford in the 1950s in Minneapolis. Subsequently, he was hired by Dairyland Insurance Co. and managed its first branch office in Bismarck, N.D. He spent the next 17 years with Dairyland/Sentry in various managerial roles in the Pacific Northwest and Southern California.

In 1971, Bob founded the Independent Indemnity Co. and served as its president until 1983. Following that, he and two partners – -his son Richard and Virginia Schacher — established the Arrowhead General Insurance Agency in a joint venture with the Classified Insurance Co. An avid student and collector of Native American artifacts, Bob settled on the name “Arrowhead” for the fledgling general agency.

Following his retirement from full-time work, he served as a consultant for the Progressive Insurance Co., and until recently, remained active with the American Agent’s Alliance.

Bob passed away peacefully of natural causes on Friday, December 15th. He is survived by his wife Corinne, son Richard, and daughter Kari.
