Perhaps I am widening the actual dispute farther than it really is, but:

Perhaps if the group were Muslim affiliated, then the university might have bent over backward to appear to be fair. This happens with increasingly frequency around the US. Or it could be related to ignorance of the separation of the church and state clause in the Constitution or what constitutes protected free speech…

I don\’t the specifics of the situation at ASU, but I know this type of display has occurred at many other college and universities and only in once was there a problem when one student attempted and in fact did damage to the one of the posters. We cannot and should let one jerk take away the right to free speech. I presume ASU has campus police who could monitor conduct at the display site or that the town police could do so. The message the group is attemping to distribute is a legitimate one although some might disagree with it or are trying to suppress. I would hope ASU and other colleges and universities would be able weigh whether the message and its free sppech implications should be heard or suppressed because the threat of violence or a lawsuit. I think the answer is clear and it doesn\’t take a PH.D to know what it is.

The group stated they never had any issues with ASU until they wanted to put up 4-5 massive 18 ft panels in the center of a 55,000 student campus. ASU would be stupid for not taking the necessary safety precautions on an already super packed super busy campus (think of, for example, blind students who are familiar with the campus pre-panel). It has absolutely nothing to do with limiting free speech. What a silly publicity stunt.

    Alyssa,

If that is the case, then I agree with you. Shame on them for their silly publicity stunt.
