Special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Edmonds, Washington police officers have arrested two men for the Dec. 17, 2004, arson of the Gregory Building in Edmonds, and more arrests are anticipated, according to ATF Seattle Special Agent in Charge Kelvin Crenshaw and Edmonds Chief of Police David Stern.
Random S. Haug, 21, and Daniel W. Shreve, 18, both of Everett, surrendered at the Everett Police Department Feb. 9 for the arson of the Gregory Building, located at 505 5th Ave.
For several days after the December fire, ATF agents from Seattle and the National Response Team worked alongside state and local officers to sift through debris to obtain evidence, identify the origin of the fire, and conduct interviews.
“The intensive joint investigation is what led to the arrest of these men who caused such pain and disruption to our community,” said Stern. “Additionally, there does not appear to be a connection between the arson and the issues surrounding the construction.”
“The community support and involvement was crucial to solving this crime,” said Crenshaw. “In fact, it was a hotline tip that pointed the investigators in the right direction.”
The arson was investigated by the Edmonds Police Department, ATF and Everett Police Department.
The case will be referred to the United States Attorney’s office for consideration for federal prosecution. If convicted in federal court, the sentence for arson is no less than five years and no more then 20 years in prison.
