Allstate Offers Californians Disaster Preparation Tips

August 9, 2005

When disaster strikes will you be ready?

In support of California First Lady Maria Shriver’s commitment to disaster preparedness among Californians, Allstate Insurance Company announced that the “10 Ways You Can Be Disaster Prepared” brochure is now available free-of-charge in each of Allstate’s more than 1,200 agency offices in California.

Produced by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and an element of the First Lady’s recently launched public awareness campaign, the brochure offers information, tools and resources for creating a family disaster plan and ensuring that you and your family are able to weather the critical hours following a disaster.

“At Allstate, our claims professionals witness first hand the impact natural disasters can have on families, communities and property,” says Allstate Claim Field Director Terry Lewkoski. “While you can’t prevent the weather in California, you can certainly take action to be better prepared in the event a disaster strikes.”

The brochure outlines 10 steps individuals and families can take
to ensure they are disaster prepared:

1) Identify your risk
2) Create a family disaster plan
3) Practice your disaster plan
4) Build a disaster supply kit for your home and car
5) Prepare your children
6) Don’t forget those with special needs
7) Learn CPR and first aid
8) Eliminate hazards in your home and the workplace
9) Understand post-9/11 risks
10) Get involved, volunteer, bear responsibility.

The “10 Ways You Can Be Disaster Prepared” brochure marks the latest chapter in Allstate’s history of promoting disaster preparedness among Californians. The company is a corporate partner of the California Fire Safe Council and other organizations dedicated to disaster prevention, preparedness and response.

Californians can pick up a copy of the brochure at all Allstate agency offices throughout California. To locate an Allstate agency in your area, go to allstate.com.
