FEMA, State of Nevada Officials to Hold Flood Assistance Briefings Following January Storms

Local official briefings have been scheduled to explain the process of applying for federal infrastructure assistance for flooding caused by periods of severe storms that occurred in Nevada from Jan. 7-13, Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials said.

“Procedures for requesting infrastructure assistance, including eligibility requirements and the reimbursement process to local governments, will be explained at briefings to be held on March 17, 18 and 22,” said Philip Parr, federal coordinating officer for the disaster. “FEMA wants to be sure that infrastructure applicants receive all the assistance available to them under the law.”

“Public assistance grants are available to public agencies and private non-profit organizations (PNPs) that provide essential governmental-type services to the general public,” said Frank Siracusa, Nevada state coordinating officer. Eligible PNP facilities include: educational facilities, utilities, emergency facilities that provide fire protection, ambulance and rescue, medical facilities such as hospitals, clinics and custodial care facilities.

The private non-profit organizations should attend an applicant’s briefing. Prior to attending the meetings, PNPs may call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 for an eligibility determination.

With President Bush’s March 7, 2005 disaster declaration, two Nevada counties, Clark and Lincoln, became eligible for federal funding to pay affected local governments 75 percent of the approved costs for restoration of damaged public facilities. Federal funds will also be available to the state on a cost-shared basis for approved projects that reduce future disaster risks.
