Sunny Southern California is lately being known as soggy Southern California as weekend rains pelted the Golden State, with more forecast for the early part of the week. As of Monday morning, three deaths in Southern California were weather-related.
Flash floods, mudslides, and power outages hit the state over the weekend, with a soggy start likely on Monday’s President’s Day holiday.
Up to 3 inches of rain was forecast along the coast Sunday night, with up to 10 inches possible in the foothills, and elevations above 7,000 feet could encounter up to 3 feet of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
The latest round of storms arrived just before the long holiday weekend kicked off, resulting in a couple of days of scattered flooding, mudslides that blocked Amtrak service, and generating two small tornadoes that briefly visited San Diego County and Riverside County. The twisters broke windows, felled trees and downed power lines.
The storms took out power to thousands of customers in the Los Angeles area, according to Southern California Edison and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
