The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated $2,317,700 to the Nevada Division of Forestry for costs in fighting this summer’s Waterfall Fire in Carson City County.
The money is coming from FEMA’s Public Assistance program through the Nevada Division of Emergency Management. According to the Aug. 26, 2004, presidential disaster declaration of the Waterfall Fire, the state and affected local government agencies may apply for federal reimbursement of 75 percent of eligible costs for emergency measures taken to protect publicly owned property.
“The Waterfall Fire consumed at least 15 homes and nearly 9,000 acres of timber and brush,” said Karen Armes, acting regional director for FEMA Region IX. “Thanks to the excellent firefighting effort, the disaster was prevented from expanding to the more populated areas of Carson City.”
