It is important to consider which smoke detectors to place in a home to protect the structure and alert the residents. The two types of smoke detectors in homes are commonly ionization and photoelectric. Ionization detectors are the least expensive and most common detectors found in homes. Unfortunately, ionization detectors do not respond rapidly to smoldering fires, which are the most common fires found in homes. Ionization detectors respond to open flame fires. Photoelectric smoke detectors respond quickly to smoldering fires and are best suited to homes. The best way to protect the home is to install smoke detectors that are both ionization and photoelectric all in one. This will alert the residents of a home of smoke danger when both types of fires are present.
