American International Group Inc., the largest commercial insurer in the U.S. and Canada, is closing an office in Georgia with 420 workers.
Some positions at the Alpharetta shared-service center will move to other AIG sites, including one in Olathe, Kansas, Jon Diat, a spokesman for the New York-based insurer, said in an e-mail.
“The efficiency of our systems and operations is a critical consideration,” Diat said. “We hope some employees will consider relocation or transition to available openings in AIG.”
AIG has been cutting jobs and shifting workers to lower- cost locations to reduce expenses and improve efficiency. The Georgia plan was reported yesterday by WSB, an Atlanta radio station. The Alpharetta site handles back-office tasks and functions as a call center for some AIG units, Diat said.
The insurer had about 64,000 employees as of Dec. 31, according to a regulatory filing.
