Tennessee Woman Pleads Guilty to False Claim of Tainted Juice

July 24, 2014

An eastern Tennessee woman has agreed to plead guilty to falsely claiming a relative’s bottle of Tropicana juice had been poisoned.

The Kingsport Times News reported that 52-year-old Elizabeth Ann Carrier of Bluff City reached a deal with prosecutors and will enter the plea in federal court on Monday.

According to the plea agreement, in June 2013, Carrier called Tropicana Products and falsely reported a relative had poisoned some of the company’s products. Carrier claimed the person had put either bug spray or rat poison into the drinks over a several week period.

Prosecutors say in the indictment if the tainting had occurred, it would have created a risk of death or bodily injury to another person.
