North Carolina Receives Disaster Declaration Due to Winter Storm

April 2, 2014

President Obama has declared a major disaster in North Carolina for damage caused by a winter storm in nine counties in early March.

Obama signed the declaration Monday for Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person and Randolph counties. It orders that federal aid supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by a severe winter storm on March 6-7.

Federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the storm.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency say additional designations may be made at a later date.
