Recovered Motorcycle Leads to Arrest of North Carolina Man

January 14, 2014

A North Carolina man was charged with one count each of insurance fraud, obtaining property by false pretense and conspiracy to obtain property by false pretense, according to an announcement made by Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin last week.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that in May 2005, Scottie Lee Barnes arranged for a friend to dispose of his 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle, for which he subsequently filed a fraudulent stolen vehicle claim with North Carolina Farm Bureau and received $15,350. The motorcycle was recovered by the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles in April 2013.

Barnes was arrested on Jan. 5 by the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office and placed under a $10,000 bond.
