Funding Announced for Disaster Recovery in Kentucky

September 9, 2013

The federal government has announced it will invest $2 million to train workers and protect businesses in two Kentucky communities affected by natural disasters.

The U.S. Economic Development Administration will provide $1.5 million to Union College in Barbourville and $500,000 to the city of West Liberty. Deputy Assistant Commerce Secretary Matt Erskine and U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers announced the funds at Union College in Barbourville on Thursday.

The Commerce Department says Union College, which was affected by flooding and tornadoes in 2011, will renovate a building for a nursing and health sciences facility to help train workers.

West Liberty will build parking lots, a park and walkways to aid pedestrian access to the downtown business district. West Liberty was hit by flooding in 2011, followed by a tornado in 2012.
