Authorities See Suspect in 10 North Carolina Fires

Police in Winston-Salem, N.C., say they are looking for an arsonist who set 10 small fires downtown this summer.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that police don’t have any suspects, and no one has been hurt. According to police, the fires have caused an estimated $4,000 in damage.

The fires occurred between July 27 and Aug. 28 in brush, grass or landscaped areas close to several buildings. The most recent fire occurred last Tuesday near railroad tracks and burned through kudzu behind a vacant building. Authorities evacuated the nearby Arts Based Elementary School as a precaution.

Police also are reviewing the circumstances of four small fires that occurred between May 17 and June 30 in or near downtown. Investigators are trying to determine if they’re linked to the recent arson fires.
