Some Want More Security Cameras Around South Carolina County

Beaufort County, S.C., has 110 security cameras in public buildings and some officials want more installed at parks, libraries and boat landings.

Deputy county administrator Bryan Hill tells The Island Packet of Hilton Head the county is working with Sheriff P.J. Tanner on were others are needed.

Tanner says cameras have helped solve cases. There are cameras at the courthouse and administration building but officials are not saying where all of them are. County Administrator Gary Kubic says officials don’t want the bad guys to know.

But the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina says cameras in public parks can inhibit freedom of speech and expression. Victoria Middleton says the general principal in America is the government does not collect information on innocent people.
