Tragic that the young man died but did the owner of the property have anything to do with the person who pulled the trigger, of course not. But as the perp has nothing we will just go after the property owner because well they have the deep pocket.
Bob, it would depend on if the owners of the property provided security in the complex and security failed to provide adequate patrolling of the property to prevent this tragedy. The parents should go after the security service too.
See below. What was a 16 year old high school junior doing outside at 2:55am? Where were his parents and why did they allow this? Everyone knows that New Years Eve brings nothing but trouble after midnight. Judging by the perps name I doubt this was a great neighborhood to begin with.
As for the suit by the “alleged” parent(s), it’s just another lame effort to make some quick money from a tragedy and excuse themselves for parental negligence. There isn’t an apartment building in the world that has a duty to provide 24/7 security. And even if there were, it’s no guarantee that this wouldn’t have occured anyway.
WEST POINT — Starkville High School junior Devin Mitchell was shot and killed Sunday morning at Ridgewood Apartments at 1311 E. Main St. in West Point.
Clay County 911 received calls at 2:55 a.m. of gunshots fired near the complex. Officers arrived and found Mitchell, 16, of Starkville, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was later transported to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo where he died as a result of his injuries, West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said.
The WPPD arrested Tavaris F. Collins, 31, aka “Frog,” and charged him with murder. Brinkley said a motive for the murder is still under investigation.
