2 South Carolina Building Inspectors Charged With Taking Money

Two Beaufort County building inspectors have been released from jail after being charged with accept cash and other items in exchange for issuing permits for properties they never inspected.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported that Larry Fields of Seabrook and Harold Crosby of Shell Point were released Friday. They were charged Thursday with one felony count.

Sheriff P.J. Tanner declined to say how much money and what other items Fields and Cosby were given for the permits. He also would not provide the locations of the properties in question.

The investigation that led to the arrests was prompted by a tip from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charleston, which uncovered the allegation during a unrelated federal fraud investigation.

It wasn’t clear if the two men have attorneys.
