Scientists are trying to develop a plan for an island on the Georgia coast to cope with rising sea levels.
Authorities say the two-year project on Tybee Island will prioritize and address the barrier island’s vulnerabilities in order to protect resources and counteract increased flooding from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Savannah Morning News reports that the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, Georgia Sea Grant, and the Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources have teamed up to develop the plan.
Jason Evans, an analyst with the Carl Vinson Institute, says potential solutions include sea walls, elevated infrastructure, beach re-nourishment, property buy-outs and new zoning ordinances that restrict development.
