Alabama Tornado 10 Football Fields Wide

Weather officials say a deadly tornado that struck two counties was 1,000 yards wide — or the length of 10 football fields put together.

The National Weather Service says in a report on storm damage that the EF-2 tornado packed winds of 125 mph as it strafed Tallapoosa and Chambers counties for more than 31 miles on Friday. Authorities say it killed 57-year-old Todd Hodge, when his manufactured home was destroyed.

The weather service said another EF-2 tornado in Chilton and Coosa counties was 700 yards wide and traveled 28 miles.

Tornadoes also hit Perry, Dallas, Autauga, Chilton, Coosa, Madison, Limestone, Lowndes and Chambers counties.

Crews surveying damage across the state had confirmed at least four tornadoes by early Monday.
