A 37-year-old Mississippi woman who claimed the Deepwater Horizon oil spill caused her to lose $9,800 from her job in Bay St. Louis faces up to 20 years in prison for mail fraud.
The Sun Herald reports Dina Garb Spoon pleaded guilty Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden. She received the money in two checks based on a claim the oil spill caused her to lose wages from A&E Tobacco Plus Inc.
Sheila Wilbanks of the U.S. Attorney’s office says Spoon, also known as Dina Marlene Spoon, had worked for the store, but store officials told federal agents she had been fired.
Spoon is free pending sentencing May 25. Her travel is restricted to Eastern Arkansas and South Mississippi. She also faces a fine of up to $250,000.
