A former head in the state Division of Motor Vehicles regional law enforcement office in Fayetteville, N.C., will begin serving an 18-month sentence in federal prison for mail fraud in April.
The Fayetteville Observer reported that 54-year-old Bill Toman also must pay $15,000 in restitution.
Toman had pleaded guilty in November to three counts of mail fraud. He was arrested in 2009, when he was leading a 12-county region of DMV law enforcement offices in Fayetteville.
Court documents say Toman was accused of pocketing $15,000 he solicited from three insurance companies under the claim that the money would be used for law enforcement.
He begins serving his sentence April 1.
