Owners of eight more Hurricane Katrina-damaged properties in Biloxi have two weeks to present the city with a plan for making them habitable, or at least restoring their exteriors.
The Sun Herald reports the city is exercising its power under Senate Bill 3204, which was passed exclusively for Biloxi. It forces owners of commercial buildings and multifamily housing to clean up or tear down their properties damaged by Katrina in 2005.
“I think it’s way overdue,” Mayor A.J. Holloway said at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
In November, the City Council gave the Community Development Department permission to meet with the owners or representatives of six buildings. Jerry Creel, community development director, said the city is willing to work with owners, giving them time to complete repairs to the interiors if they don’t have a tenant. But he said they must restore the exteriors.
Creel’s said his department has put together a list of more than 40 Katrina-blighted properties. “We expect that list to grow,” he said.
