Kentucky has received the largest piece of $8.4 million in U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration grants for fiscal year 2011.
The state is receiving $627,659 from the health and safety training grants. The U.S. Labor Department says the funds are being used to provide federally mandated training to miners.
The grants are being divided among 47 states and the Navajo Nation. Some states also offer training for mine operators on compliance with health and safety standards, for miners on their rights under the law and for mine rescue teams on being prepared for emergencies.
