Georgia City Hopes to Add Tornado Sirens to Parks

Authorities in Rome hope to install tornado sirens at five parks in the northwest Georgia city.

The Floyd County Emergency Management Agency is applying for a $135,000 grant which would pay for the warning systems.

The Rome News-Tribune reports that the sirens would cost about $75,000. Authorities say an additional $25,000 would pay for 1,000 weather radios – with many of them going to the public – and the remainder of the grant would fund a weather warning system for the deaf. That system uses strobe lights to warn of bad weather.

Floyd County EMA Director Scotty Hancock said approval of the grant is up to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.
