South Carolina Hospital, Doctor Ordered to Pay $2.8M in Patient Death

June 1, 2010

A South Carolina jury has ordered a hospital and doctor to pay $2.88 million to a man after finding them liable for his wife’s death in 2002.

An Horry County jury on Friday found Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and Dr. Stephen Law negligent in the care of Kelly Fay.

Fay died in 2002, about 48 hours after she had been sent home with a diagnosis of kidney stones. She was given a prescription for pain medication and told to come back in two days. Before her appointment, she had a seizure and went into septic shock.

The jury also found that Fay’s husband, Sean Fay, was partly negligent. His attorney Russ Foster said that was likely because he didn’t take his wife back to the hospital when her condition worsened.
