Early Partial Estimate of Nashville Flood Damage: $1.5 Billion

May 9, 2010

As of last Friday, damages to Nashville from serious flooding were estimated at $1.5 billion, a number Mayor Karl Dean said will climb because all areas had not been checked.

Dean said that estimate only includes commercial, industrial and nearly 2,000 residences. The tab hasn’t been estimated yet for public roads, bridges or the contents in any of those buildings.

Dean said officials have identified damage on 9,284 parcels, nearly two thousand of which are residential properties.

An initial assessment has been made on 83 percent of the county. Some areas were not accessible.

The city has set up a Web site where property owners can report damage. The site is not connected to relief efforts or emergency services – it will be for reporting property damage only.

“The assessment is continuing, and we ask property owners to report their damage so we can get an accurate figure,” the mayor said.
