It is unfortunate that this country lacks the balls to ban this breed. With all the other breeds available, there is no excuse to have a pit bull. And, I’m sick of the argument that someone has a “right” to own one. At some point, the “rights” of the majority to live in safety needs to take precedent over people like “LaToya” who had to have this beast in an apartment. LaToya’s stupid decision has now changed this poor girl’s life forever.

All breeds can “bite”; this breed is unique in that it is genetically aggressive and doesn’t simply bite – it mauls and won’t let go until somebody intervenes. The results of it’s attacks are horrifying. NOBODY SHOULD BE EXPOSED TO THIS RISK.

ANY dog can be made vicious. There are plenty of Am Staffs (American Staffordshire Bull Terriers – so-called Pit bulls) who are normal dogs. There is no such thing as “genetic aggression”. If not this breed, they’d use shepherds or maybe bull terriers. Banning a dog breed is a silly response to a tragedy. I’ve seen claims for dog bites from Akitas which were at least as bad if not worse than this breed. Now do individual governments have to survey all breeds to see which one is “bad”?

I think the real problem is the useless $50 fine for a stray dog. Owners must be responsible for their animals. Perhaps a financial responsibility law akin to car ownership if you own any animal…

If the dog had been properly confined – not chained – it wouldn’t have happened. In many places it is illegal to keep a dog chained as it can make them aggressive as well as targets for bullies. It doesn’t just occur with pit bulls, any dog can become aggressive when kept in such a manner. Erect a decent kennel or run with adequate room, high sides and an area with shade. It is sad that the young girl was severely injured, but also sad that the dog’s owner didn’t know enough to properly care for the animal.
