Preliminary assessments show more than 700 homes were damaged by the deadly tornadoes that struck Mississippi over the last weekend in April.
A total of 390 homes were destroyed or sustained major damage and 341 had minor damage based on surveys conducted by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration.
Officials tallied the damage in Attala, Choctaw, Holmes, Monroe, Union, Warren and Yazoo counties. Ten people were killed in Mississippi and two in Alabama during Saturday’s storms.
Gov. Haley Barbour has asked President Barack Obama for a disaster declaration, which would allow people to apply for financial federal assistance in most of the affected counties.
