29 miners dead is a tragedy but it shouldn’t surprise anyone. In spite of having emergency pods in place, none of them made it into them. The irrefutable fact is mining is an inherently dangerous business and nothing will change that. It was dangerous 100 years ago and will be 100 years from now. The souls who work in the mines do so because it pays better than any other job the un-skilled, un-educated can findd. They’ll admit that. These “investigtions” are a charade. Even the smallest electrical spark can cause a methane explosion down under. To get a feel for the reality of mining, take the “mine tour” next time you’re in the Scranton – Wilkes Barre, PA area. It’s frightening. While the company’s violation are inexcusable, nobody can say with any certainty that this disaster would have been prevented.
