April 1, 2010

Just one after storms swept through South Carolina, insurance companies were reporting an estimated $4.4 million in damages as a result of hail and wind.

Insurance companies reported receiving 1,768 claims as of Tuesday afternoon. A total of 491 homeowner/property claims had been filed; in addition, 1,277 auto claims have been received by the insurance companies. Hail and downed trees have been the primary reasons for damages.

Hail damage was particularly heavy in the Upstate around the Spartanburg and Gaffney areas, according to news reports. Tornadoes were reported in McCormick, Edgefield, Lexington and Fairfield counties.

Insurance adjusters began assessing damage on Monday. Many more insurance claims were filed Tuesday and those numbers are expected to rise.

The survey, conducted by the S.C. Insurance News Service, included data from insurance companies that do business in South Carolina representing about 70 percent of the market.
