“The families of eight of the fallen Charleston firefighters sued for wrongful death, naming 30 defendants including the furniture store as well as various furniture manufacturers and equipment manufacturers.”

if this is a furniture store, then how can you make anybody except the store and the fire station in the claim a defendant? the store purchase the furniture to be sold out of its facility. it sounds to me that the lawyer is the one trying to make money and this has got to stop! truthfully, would this job be just like the military?! afterall, we know that if we have a job like a firefighter and policeman, that this can happen. you knew this from day 1 and could happen everyday. my main problem with this is the outdated equipment to fight the fire! so, only question is was this a regular fire department or volunteer? if regular, where is the city’s pay in all this? afterall, they have insurance to help pay for this as well.

Why were “various furniture manufacturers” inclined to settle?

What about the store? Did local code mandate a sprinkler for this construction/area/occupancy?

This is not as unusual as you think. These are some payments made to victims and families of the RI The Station night club fire. Which was started by the featured band use of pyrotechnics which ignited foam sound insulation and caused 100 deaths.

Nearly $175 million has been offered to the families of the victims of the fire by various defendants in settlement.

Providence television station WPRI-TV made an out of court settlement of US $30 million, for their part of the tragedy, as their video journalist was said to be obstructing escape and not helping people exit.

JBL Speakers settled out of court for $815,000. JBL was accused of using flammable foam inside their speakers. The company denied any wrongdoing.

Anheuser-Busch has offered $5 million, McLaughlin & Moran, Anheuser-Busch’s distributor, has offered $16 million, Clear Channel Broadcasting has offered $22 million. Home Depot and insulation company Polar Industries has also made a settlement offer of $5 million.

Sealed Air Corporation agreed to pay $25 million as settlement. Sealed Air made soundproofing foam installed in the club.

The State of Rhode Island and the town of West Warwick agreed to pay $10 million as settlement.

The band Great White offered $1 million. Club owners Jeffrey and Michael Derderian insurers have offered to settle for $813,000.

I still wonder what would have happened if some of those defendants dug in their heels & would not settle because they were so far removed from any negligence by any stretch of some attorney’s imagination. Aren’t there, collectively, more of them than attorneys?

-A spaceshuttle explodes in space an astronaut Will die!
-someone shoots at a Police Officer, the Officer Will die!
-You get taken to the hospital you could die!
-Buy a new car, it will depreciate!
-You get a home loan that you cannot afford, it Will get taken away!
-You buy stock, it more than likely Will crash and you left with less!
-You drink and drive you Will go to jail or be tried for murder when you Kill someone!
I think you all get the point. Life is full of disappointments. If you are aware of what can happen in life, how can you sue? Fire fighters Will die in a fire! Policemen will die during their course of work! Hospitals will not be able to save everyone! Cars will depreciate with or without recalls, some faster than others! Come on judges stop allowing these lawsuits and let people take responsibility. No wonder I never get picked for jury duty!!

both previous entries bring up interesting points… but some extra entities that do not contribute to the direct incident should not be considered as accountable for their actions.

if this were the case, why can’t i just sue anyone and everyone for everything that goes wrong? afterall, it can’t just be one person’s responsibility or can it? truly, i think we as a society believe that we can get money because the lawyers get want more money in their pockets. those companies that are incidental should not agree to anything and go to court and finally put the blame where it belongs.

professional people that do a job knowing that their are hazards, should not just sue anyone. afterall, could we allow our service members in the military do the same? afterall, can we say you did not provide me with proper protection, i need money? the policeman’s dog, can he sue if shot and killed? this just opens a box of worms that if brought to the supreme court, they would laugh. next thing you know, is that someone who chucked a cigarette and caused a fire, will have sued the driver, the cigarette maker, the owner of the grass or facility that caught fire, any manufacturers of any items that were burnt at the location, then the firefighters equipment that did not put it out in an instant, the manufacturer of the fire engine because it did not get there fast enough, the engine maker, etc etc etc. so how far can we get the money to extend, and the main person getting all of this is the lawyer, who will get money if they win or lose. this is so frivilous!
