It is very unfortunate that SeaWorld lost a staff member. Our prayers go out to her family, her SeaWrold Family and her friends. Should whales be kept in captivity, I dont know. Should any wild animal be held in captivity no matter how small or large…I don’t know. Zoos keep wild animals in captivity as well as many other businesses as well as some common people and celebrities. Any animal lover knows that even your own household pet can have a bad day. How many people have been scratched by their own cat or had their own dog snap at them. How many times have they been scratched or bitten as their cat/dog got overly excited by a toy? Unfortunately, killer whales weigh 12,0000 tons and has sharp teeth and any minor inncident can in one second be turned into a major inncident. The trainers at SeaWorld love their jobs and the animals they train. They have spent many, many hours training, and being educated. They all know the dangers of their careers. I am sure Dawn would be horrified at the thought of this whales’s life being terminated for a possible accident. I hope (and I am confident they will) that SeaWorld considers all aspects of this incident before deciding the fate of this animal. I would rather see this whale be rehabilitated (taught survival, and his natural instincts) and released in back into the wild instead of being terminated. It is such a sad time for all involved.

My understanding was that the whale was not going to be terminated and has been integrated back into a tank with other whales. This is a terrible case but anyone who works with animals should know that they are unpredictable and that reasonable caution is needed around them at all times. As far as media report go she was doing what was standard procedure.

Bad days? We all have them but with whales, dogs, horses it can be fatal and without warning. Random acts of nuttiness tend to be fewer and farther between for crazy humans.

Yeah…NO…people are crazier by far. Animals live by their instincts. It is cruel & unusual punishment for large predators to be kept in captivity for our amusement. That said, it is unlikely the killer whales kept in captivity could be successfully released back to the wild, as most have been in captivity for their entire lives.
