Number 1 – when this claim happened, didn’t she wonder why she never got paid for the damage? I assume she filed a claim.
Number 2 – What in the world was she driving in 1976 that cost $17,500???? And it doesn’t say it was totalled, just damaged.
Inquiring minds want to know..
The loss occurred in 1978 – at that time she was likely not involved in the family finances that much. Possibly he’s an Ex-Husband for a number of reasons, among them money management. Another potential is that there was more to the claim that what was referenced here, and the husband refused to sign the check as it may have contained that “infamous” release of all claims language.

She will be dead before she figures this one out…..good luck to the grandkids.
I am guessing that it was something very nice and she just “forgot”. Must be nice to just “forget” what most would consider a nice salary back then!

Don’t you think maybe the draft was reported as never received and a duplicate draft issued and cashed?
You hit the nail squarely on the head!
She should check her state’s unclaimed property division.
The Insurance Company, by law, should have given the monies to their state’s unclaimed property division if the check was not cashed within two years.
However, I am not sure how long the state would hold it?
Watch, some PA will reopen her claim and get her double! LOL :)
good luck getting money from New York State at this time. Let’s hope that the check is a duplicate and that a copy was in fact cashed.
