LG&E, Kentucky Utilities and East Kentucky Power Cooperative say they are voluntarily replacing some programmable thermostats installed as part of a conservation program due to a potential safety concern.
LG&E and Kentucky Utilities say about 12,500 customers have the thermostats in their homes or businesses as part of the Demand Conservation program. East Kentucky Power says about 3,300 customers have the thermostats as part of its SimpleSaver program. Customers will not be charged for the replacement.
The utilities say the thermostats are among a type that has shown signs of overheating in very limited instances. They say that while it has not been concluded there is any safety issue with these thermostats, they decided to proactively remove all existing units while the matter is being investigated.
Customers who participate in the conservation programs can arrange to have their thermostats replaced by contacting LG&E and KU at (866) 857-2665 and by contacting East Kentucky Power at (800) 305-5493.
