One would think they would build a $16 million structure to withstand hurricanes given the gulf coast location and recent lessons on this matter.

Was Ida even a cat 1 storm when it made landfall or was it just a tropical storm at that point?

sounds like the engineers thought about the wind but not the surge when they built it. which is kind of dumb, since all of us that live in a hurricane state know that the wind does the least of the damage.

Man makes his plans and declares it to be the best, how it can withstand the winds & waves. Obviously even in 2009 we still fall short.

We think we know so much but in reality we can’t even build a dock to withstand a weak storm. Can’t cure a virus. Can’t stop a conflict that has been raging for generations. Has anything really changed in the last century since the Titanic was declared unsinkable?

I know I’m rambling here but I think of all the time I spent underwriting against fire, the same thing that destroyed Rome millenia ago & Chicago in 1871. Nothing has really changed, just our hubris.

Yep…it’s all luck when it comes to property underwriting. i’ve always thought of it as a commodity that we’re selling as opposed to something against which you can really minimize exposure. The newest, nicest buildings get smashed by hurricanes in the south, earthquakes & fires in the west, ice storms in the north and tornados in the middle. No escape!

Get the incompetent hillbillies who built this piece of crap back out to do it right at their own expense. If the state doesn’t pursue this as negligent design and/or work product it’s just as negligent. And just how did the state of Mississippi justify spending $16,000,000 on a freakin’ fishing pier? Who uses this pier? Does it generate income? Sounds like another typical pork project to pacify some crooked politician.

For the $16 million spent they sure could have bought a lot of boats – Just 1500 feet – report shows it can accomodate 30 fishermen at the point – – open 24/7 – It’s not like you couldn’t row a boat out there! How many people use it on average? Is there a charge? Who was the idiot that designed it? What a folly – I’m sure JQTax payer footed that one… What would a Cat2 or 3 have done? Made matchsticks? What a joke – I’m sure they’ll repair/rebuild

Gulf Shores is in A-L-A-B-A-M-A,not Mississippi. And hillbillies are in
the H-I-L-L-S, not at the coast.
Are you trying to insuate that Alabamians
are ignorant? Don’t generalize the stupidity of a choice few to all of the
fine citizens of my state of Alabama.

Piers like this one does generate a good
revenue. A fee is charged to go unto the
pier. Piers like this one provide a means
for people who can’t afford the expensive
fishing boats/trips a chance to catch some
    good fish.

    ROLL TIDE ROLL!

Gulf Shores is a pretty upscale area. No hillbillies there. Just Yankees trying to get warm.

Amen Suze. Roll Tide! For those uninformed out there who are on the golf course, fishing is a big business. If I get down to the coast I will definitely check this pier out.
