745 Georgia Homes Destroyed By Flooding, Says Red Cross

The American Red Cross has released preliminary disaster assessment information from flooding that swamped parts of Georgia.

The organization said an estimated 2,803 Georgia homes have been affected by the flooding. Of those homes, 745 are destroyed and 760 have major damage.

State officials have estimated losses at about $500 million, with most of it not covered by insurance.

Red Cross caseworkers are working to connect with people in flood-affected areas and providing financial assistance for food, clothing, shelter and health-related concerns.

Since the storms the organization has provided nearly 1,838 overnight shelter stays for about 500 affected residents and has provided nearly 20,000 meals.

Also, 742 volunteers and staff from 18 states have gone to affected areas to support flood victims.
